Guatemala API 5L B-grade Steel Pipe Project Case

The old subsea pipeline had been subjected to localized corrosion and erosion as a result of prolonged exposure to seawater, marine life, and high-pressure environments, endangering the reliable and safe delivery of natural gas to regional industries and homes.

Custom Product Solution: API 5L Grade B Steel Pipes with Green FBE Coating (500μm)

Following detailed technical discussions and the evaluation of site requirements, CHINA ROYAL STEEL delivered a customised solution in API 5L Grade B steel pipes with special FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) powder coating that met completely the strict demands of subsea maintenance. The key product advantages are:

High-Performance Raw Material – API 5L Grade B: Based on API 5L line pipe standard or more, with strength band of 415 MPa and 240 MPa for tensile and yield, respectively. These pipes have high pressure bearing capacity, which can bear high external loads in subsea installation and long term operation.

Excellent Corrosion Protection – FBE Powder Coating: The surface of the pipe was coated with a 500μm FBE coating, which has excellent properties against seawater, salt spray and marine fouling. The coating, which adheres tightly, is impact resistant and resistant to wear, separates the steel from the extreme subsea environments and extends the lifespan of the pipeline by more than 20 years.

Specialized Identification – Green Coating: FBE coating has been made special green for helping the client to identify on site and manage safety, to enhance the speed of locate and put in undersea operation.

Application Implementation & On-Site Support

Only the API 5L Grade B FBE steel pipes were applied for the subsea natural gas pipeline replacement and pressure reinforcing sealing sections were reinforced and weakened leaking parts were strengthened by them. CHINA ROYAL STEEL offered all-round assistance service to make the project run well:

1.Accurate Pipe Customization: OD ranged from 168 to 323.9 mm and thickness ranged from 6 to 12.7 mm, according to the customer’s pipeline design drawings and field measurement.

2.Rigid Quality Control: De-rusting of pre-coating surface to grade Sa 2.5, coating thickness determination and adhesion testing resulted in the pipes fulfilling the 500μm coating requirement as well as the API 5L standards.

3.Smooth Logistic & On-site Assistance: Arranged professional marine transport and customs clearance for the pipes to reach at Guatemala's coastal construction port as planned, and offer technical assistance for pre-installation examination.
