H beam:Specifications,Properties and Application-Royal Group

H Beam Steel Building

H-shaped steel is a type of steel with an H-shaped cross section. It has good bending resistance, strong load-bearing capacity and light weight. It consists of parallel flanges and webs and is widely used in buildings, bridges, machinery and other fields as beam and column components. It can effectively improve the structural load-bearing capacity and save metal.

Specifications and Properties of H-beam

1. H Beam Specifications Based on International Standards

W Series Specifications:
Specifications are based on "Cross-Section Height (inches) x Weight per Foot (pounds)." Key products include the W8x10 H Beam, W8x40 H Beam, and W16x89 H Beam. Among them, the W8x10 H Beam has a section height of 8 inches (about 203mm), a weight of 10 pounds per foot (about 14.88kg/m), a web thickness of 0.245 inches (about 6.22mm), and a flange width of 4.015 inches (about 102mm). It is suitable for photovoltaic brackets and secondary beams of small H Beam Steel Buildings; the W8x40 H Beam has a weight of 40 pounds per foot (about 59.54kg/m), a web thickness of 0.365 inches (about 9.27mm), and a flange width of 8.115 inches (about 206mm). The load-bearing capacity is doubled and it can be used as the main beam of medium-sized factories; the W16x89 H Beam has a section height of 16 inches (about 406mm), a weight of 89 pounds per foot (about 132.5kg/m), a web thickness of 0.485 inches (about 12.32mm), and a flange width of 10.315 inches (approximately 262 mm) is a heavy-duty specification designed specifically for long-span H-beam steel buildings and bridge load-bearing structures.

European standard specifications:
This covers two types: HEA H-beam and UPN H-beam. Specifications are indicated as "Section Height (mm) × Section Width (mm) × Web Thickness (mm) × Flange Thickness (mm)." HEA H beams are a representative of European wide-flange steel sections. For example, the HEA 100 specification has a section height of 100mm, a width of 100mm, a web thickness of 6mm, and a flange thickness of 8mm. Its theoretical weight is 16.7kg/m, combining lightweight and torsional resistance. They are commonly used in machinery bases and equipment frames. UPN H beams, on the other hand, have narrow-flange sections. For example, the UPN 100 has a section height of 100mm, a width of 50mm, a web thickness of 5mm, and a flange thickness of 7mm. Its theoretical weight is 8.6kg/m. Due to its compact cross-section, it is suitable for space-constrained steel structure nodes, such as curtain wall supports and small equipment columns.

2. H Beam Specifications Associated by Material

H Beam Q235b Specifications:
As a Chinese national standard low-carbon steel H-beam, the core specifications cover common sizes from H Beam 100 to H Beam 250. The H Beam 100 (cross-section: 100mm height, 100mm width, 6mm web, 8mm flange; theoretical weight: 17.2kg/m) and the H Beam 250 (cross-section: 250mm height, 250mm width, 9mm web, 14mm flange; theoretical weight: 63.8kg/m) offer a yield strength ≥ 235MPa, excellent weldability, and can be processed without preheating. They are primarily used for beams and columns in small and medium-sized domestic factories and multi-story steel-structured residential buildings, offering a highly cost-effective general-purpose specification.

ASTM H Beam Series Specifications:
Based on ASTM A36 H Beam and A992 Wide Flange H Beam. ASTM A36 H Beam has a yield strength of ≥250 MPa and is available in sizes from W6x9 to W24x192. The commonly used W10x33 (section height 10.31 inches × flange width 6.52 inches, weight 33 pounds per foot) is suitable for load-bearing structures in overseas industrial plants and warehouses. A992 Wide Flange H Beam, a high-toughness wide-flange steel section (the representative type of H Beam Wide Flange), has a yield strength of ≥345 MPa and is primarily available in sizes W12x65 (section height 12.19 inches × flange width 12.01 inches, weight 65 pounds per foot) and W14x90 (section height 14.31 inches × flange width 14.02 inches, weight 90 pounds per foot). It is designed for high-rise building frames and heavy crane beams, and can withstand dynamic loads and severe impacts.

3. Combining Customization and Universalization

Customize Carbon Steel H Beam Specifications:
Customizable cross-section height (50mm-1000mm), web/flange thickness (3mm-50mm), length (6m-30m), and surface treatment (galvanizing, anti-corrosion coating) are available. For example, corrosion-resistant carbon steel H-beams with a cross-section height of 500mm, a web thickness of 20mm, and a flange thickness of 30mm can be customized for offshore projects. For heavy equipment foundations, extra-wide flange H-beams with a length of 24m and a cross-section height of 800mm can be customized to meet non-standard load-bearing requirements.

General Steel H-Beam Specifications:
In addition to the aforementioned specifications, general specifications include the Hea Heb 150 (150mm × 150mm × 7mm × 10mm, theoretical weight 31.9kg/m) and the H Beam 300 (300mm × 300mm × 10mm × 15mm, theoretical weight 85.1kg/m). These are widely used in applications such as steel structure platforms, temporary support, and container frames, forming a comprehensive specification matrix ranging from light to heavy, and from standard to customized.
