UPN Channels: Dimensions, Weight and EN 10279 Standards

UPN channels — also known as U-profile steel channels find their applications in structural steelwork due to their compatibility in solutions for buildings, industrial halls, bridges, machinery frames, etc. They are pre-engineered U-shaped structural elements with specific dimensions and weights, designed to deliver predictable performance in engineering applications.

UPN

EN 10279 and DIN Standards

UPN channels are based on the European dimensions of the DIN 1026‑1 and tolerances of the EN 10279, and are suitable for construction in 2026. These parameters enforce quality and interchangeability of each UPN section in terms of its height (h), flange width (b), web thickness (tw) and flange thickness (tf).

UPN Channel Sizes and Weights

Standard UPN channel sizes are UPN 50, UPN 80, UPN 120, UPN 180 and UPN 240, the weights vary from 5,6 kg/m UPN 50 up to 33,2 kg/m for UPN 240. UPN size 120 beams can hold more than 1,3KN per m and for larger sizes such as UPN 300 and over can reach more than 40 KN per meter depending on the thickness of the flange and web.

Importance of Standardization

The allowable tolerances on UPN channel dimensions and sectional properties are specified by the EN 10279 standard. It is important that en steel channel producers be equivalent, so the EN steel channels are standardized to facilitate interchangeable use, which is also important for steel structure works where it is mandatory to be allowed some tolerance in the dimensions.

Material Grades for UPN Channels

UPN sections are the most commonly produced in hot rolled steel grades like S235JR, S275JR and S355JR and are available in multiple levels of strength and ductility which enables them to be used for many different construction applications whether that be for industrial buildings or civil infrastructure.

UPN Channels in Steel Construction

In summary, UPN channels are a foundational component in modern steel construction, with well-established EN 10279 dimension and tolerance standards ensuring reliability and performance for upcoming 2026 projects.
