Steel Sheet Piles Shipped to the Philippines for Port & Coastal Projects

Philippines, Southeast Asia - Royal Steel Group, the client, a leading infrastructure construction company in the Philippines, is carrying out a major coastal reclamation and port expansion project in Cebu. With rising demand for coastal development and port upgrades to support maritime trade and local economic growth, the project required high-performance steel sheet piles that could provide reliable retaining structures. Key requirements included strong load-bearing capacity, excellent corrosion resistance to withstand the tropical marine environment, and ease of installation to meet the tight construction timeline.

Solution: Tailored Steel Sheet Piles for Philippine Coastal Projects

Based on detailed discussions with the client and a thorough analysis of the project’s coastal soil conditions and construction requirements, we delivered a tailored solution using hot-rolled U-type steel sheet piles, the preferred choice for coastal and port works. Key advantages and custom features include:

  • High-Quality Base Material: Q355B carbon structural steel (equivalent to ASTM A36) was used, offering excellent tensile strength (≥470 MPa) and yield strength (≥355 MPa). This ensures strong load-bearing capacity and structural stability, effectively resisting soil pressure and seawater impact during reclamation.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Treatment: Hot-dip galvanizing with a zinc layer ≥85 μm provides a dense protective coating, significantly improving resistance to seawater, salt spray, and humid tropical conditions. This extends the service life to over 25 years in marine environments.

  • Specifications & Design: Supplied piles ranged 400–500 mm in width, 6–12 m in height, and 10–16 mm in thickness. The U-type interlocking design enables quick, seamless installation, forming a leak-proof retaining structure essential for coastal reclamation.

Project Application & Execution

Our steel sheet piles were applied to two key areas of the project:

  1. Coastal Reclamation Retaining Walls: Forming a stable barrier to enclose the reclamation zone, preventing soil erosion and seawater intrusion during land formation.

  2. Port Wharf Foundation Reinforcement: Strengthening the wharf foundation to support the weight of ships and cargo handling equipment.

To ensure smooth project execution, we provided comprehensive support:

  1. Conducted pre-installation technical training for the client’s construction team, covering interlocking techniques and quality control measures.

  2. Managed efficient maritime logistics, handling customs clearance and delivering materials to Cebu ahead of schedule.

  3. Sent technical personnel on-site to guide installation, ensuring the retaining structures met design specifications.
