Steel C Channel Dimensions: Standard Sizes, Weight & Supply Options

Steel C channel, commonly referred to as American Standard Channel, is a popular hot rolled structural steel section utilized in construction, framing and equipment manufacturing. It has a C-shaped cross-section with tapered inner flanges (~16.67 % slope) and a good strength to weight ratio and its flat web back makes it easy to bolt and weld to plates or other steel members. For engineers, contractors, and steel purchasers, accurate steel c channel dimensions are crucial for load determination, project quotation, and purchase of materials.

What Is Steel C Channel

According to AISC specifications, there are two basic channel types: C‑shapes (American Standard Channels) are formed with tapered flanges and  MC‑shapes (Miscellaneous Channels) are utilized in special wider‑flange needs. Designations are of the form C depth × weight-per-foot, for example C8×11.5 is an 8‑inch-deep channel that weighs 11.5 lb/ft. Most common steel C‑channels are made to ASTM A36 carbon steel; higher strength grades like A572‑50 can be ordered as well for heavier duty applications.

Steel C Channel Dimensions & Weight Overview

The standard hot rolled C-shape sizes are from C3×4.1 to C15×50 for nominal depths of 3-15 inches complying with the dimensional requirements of ASTM A6 /AISC. Significant dimensional parameters of the sections are the depth of the section, the width of the flanges, the thickness of the web, the thickness of the flange, and the weight per unit length.

Typical Applications

Steel C‑channels are selected for multiple structural‑steel scenarios:

1.Structural framing, wall supports, roof purlins and girts

2.Bracing, reinforcement for building and industrial structures

3.Equipment frames, mezzanine platforms, warehouse racking

4.Trailer frames, machine bases and general metal fabrication

5.Light‑weight C3‑C6 channels also suit light‑construction and residential‑grade brackets and shelving.
