It has a C-shaped cross-section with tapered inner flanges (~16.67 % slope) and a good strength to weight ratio and its flat web back makes it easy to bolt and weld to plates or other steel members. What Is Steel C Channel

According to AISC specifications, there are two basic channel types: C‑shapes (American Standard Channels) are formed with tapered flanges and MC‑shapes (Miscellaneous Channels) are utilized in special wider‑flange needs. Designations are of the form C depth × weight-per-foot, for example C8×11.5 is an 8‑inch-deep channel that weighs 11.5 lb/ft.
