The 5 Key Galvanization Inspection Standards You Must Know as an Ocean Steel Buyer

In marine engineering, port and wharf construction, as well as offshore infrastructure projects, the corrosion protection of steel has always been a crucial factor determining the safety throughout the entire lifecycle of the project and the return on investment (ROI). The areas exposed to marine atmosphere and seawater splashes fall under the C5-M (extremely high corrosion grade) or CX (extreme marine environment) defined in the ISO 12944 standard. Under such harsh conditions, if ordinary steel does not have adequate galvanization corrosion protection, it is highly likely to suffer severe rusting within a few years, resulting in huge maintenance and replacement costs.

As a globally leading provider of steel manufacturing and supply chain services, Royal Steel Group has observed during its interactions with international contractors and engineering buyers that the majority of corrosion failures do not stem from the material itself, but rather from the oversight of crucial galvanization inspection standards during the acceptance process.

H Beam

To help global buyers avoid quality risks during the procurement process, we have summarized the key testing standards and practical points as follows:

Testing items Reference standard Key points and methods of detection Key reference indicators for buyers (C5-M marine environment)
Zinc layer thickness and adhesion amount ASTM A123 Perform multi-point non-destructive testing using a magnetic thickness gauge to measure the overall uniformity and average thickness of the galvanized coating. Structural steel with a thickness of more than 6mm (such as H-beams, main beams): Average 85 – 100 μm
Marine steel sheet piles and thick-walled steel pipes: Recommended ≥ 120 μm
ISO 1461
GB/T 13912
2. Coating adhesion and bonding strength ASTM D3359 Grid/Line Peeling Test: Tests the bonding strength between the galvanized layer and the steel substrate.
Hammer Test: Tests by using a specific weight to conduct hammer strikes.
After being struck, only dents remain. There is no cracking, peeling or delamination of the galvanized layer from the steel substrate.
ISO 2409
GOST standard
3. Resistance to salt spray accelerated corrosion ASTM B117 The samples were placed in a continuous salt spray test chamber with a 5% concentration to conduct an accelerated corrosion assessment. The neutral salt spray test (NSS) should last for 500 - 1000 hours without any rust formation. It is recommended to adopt the next-generation  Zinc Aluminum Magnesium (ZAM)  technology.
ISO 9227 (NSS)
4. Zinc solution purity and alloy composition ASTM B6 Verify the material certificate of the zinc ingots used for galvanizing, as well as the addition ratios of elements such as Al and Mg in the new coating materials (such as ZAM). The purity of the zinc liquid should reach 99.995% (SHG); the zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating needs to be verified for the self-healing property of the cuts and the uniformity of corrosion resistance.
EN 1179
5. Material List and Third-Party Inspection EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 Verify the material list provided by the factory (MTC).
Entrust a third-party institution (such as SGS / BV / Intertek) to conduct pre-shipment inspection (PSI).
MTC must clearly record the chemical composition, mechanical properties and the measured values of the galvanized layer, so as to achieve full-process quality traceability.

Summary and Procurement Suggestions

Against the backdrop of accelerated global marine infrastructure and energy projects in 2026, steel sheet piles and steel pipe piles are widely used in ports and offshore engineering. The marine engineering industry is subject to stringent demands for the corrosion resistance reliability of various load-bearing steel structures. In extreme corrosive environments such as C5-M and CX levels, the turning angles of components and welding positions are vulnerable points for corrosion protection. Failure to meet the standard for zinc coating thickness will directly threaten the overall stability and long-term service safety of the structure.

From the perspective of the entire engineering life cycle, the marine splash zone, tidal difference zone, alternating dry and wet conditions, and chloride ion erosion in these areas directly determine the anti-corrosion ability of the steel structure. For high-load load-bearing components, hot-dip galvanizing protection is the core barrier to ensure the strength of H-beams and galvanized roof trusses. Once the corrosion protection fails, it will cause the steel section to weaken and the nodes to rust, resulting in high operation and maintenance costs.

Currently, most international marine engineering projects mainly adopt hot-dip galvanizing as the main corrosion protection solution. However, small components such as angle steel and flat steel are prone to defects such as incomplete coating, insufficient coating adhesion, and other hidden problems. These hidden defects are easily overlooked during the on-site acceptance stage and are also the main causes of premature rusting of steel structures in many offshore projects.

According to international standards such as ISO 12944, ASTM A123, and EN ISO 1461, marine galvanized steel structures need to undergo inspections for coating thickness, adhesion, salt spray, and appearance. Key positions of components such as channel steel, embedded parts, steel casing, and connection components are specifically inspected to ensure the continuity and integrity of the zinc coating and adapt to extreme marine environments.

As a steel manufacturing and comprehensive solution provider with a strong presence in the international market, Royal Steel Group always adheres to higher quality control standards than those commonly adopted in the industry. Whether it is steel sheet piles used for port and wharf support, structural steel and galvanized roof trusses in coastal industrial plants, or steel angle bars, flat steel, and other steel components, we can provide complete galvanizing test reports and third-party 3.2 quality inspection certifications that comply with ASTM/ISO/EN standards.
