ASTM A588 Weathering Steel Material
ASTM A588 is a high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel which has been designed for use in structural applications where a higher level of corrosion resistance is required.
The alloying elements of A588 allow a protective surface layer to be formed under suitable atmospheric exposure. What happens over time is the original hot-rolled surface transforms to a typical brown or rust colored patina that offers both function and aesthetics.
The weathering action is most efficient in atmosphere of frequent wetting and drying and sufficient exposure.
