ASTM Channel Specification Table
KEY FEATURES
1.Great Weathering Properties
ASTM A588 forms a protective rust-like patina when exposed to alternating wet and dry atmospheric conditions, providing improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared with conventional carbon structural steel.
2.High Structural Strength
The strength, toughness, and durability required for severe structural applications is furnished by the low-alloy nature of the material.
3.Hot-rolled production
Hot rolling enables uniform mechanical characteristics and dimensional form throughout its length, which is why the channel is good for fabrication work and construction.
4.Less Maintenance
In appropriate outdoor applications, the protective patina may eliminate the need for the traditional painting and the surface maintenance.
5.Adaptable Supply
Channels segments that are tailored to the project drawings and the purchasing specifications - including made to measure length, cut, drill and value added processing.
Surface Finish
Conventional Surfaces
Galvanized Surface
Spray Paint Surface
ASTM A588 vs. Conventional Carbon Steel Channel
| Feature | ASTM A588 Channel | Conventional Carbon Steel Channel |
| Corrosion Resistance | High atmospheric weather resistance | Standard |
| Weathering Patina | Yes | No |
| Structural Strength | High | Depends on grade |
| Outdoor Application | Excellent | Requires suitable protection |
| Maintenance | Potentially reduced | Usually requires coating maintenance |
| Manufacturing | Hot Rolled | Hot Rolled |
| Typical Use | Bridges, infrastructure, outdoor structures | General construction |
The actual corrosion resistance depends on the environment. The use of ASTM A588 steel is mainly for atmospheric exposure and it is not considered for use in continuously wet, marine, submerged, or severe corrosive conditions without being protected.
