The nodular cast iron, ductile iron or cast iron steel pipe is a composite material that utilizes the ductility of iron and the strength of steel. Spheroidized structured graphite is also available in spherical form (grades 6–7) with a spheroidization level of 1–3 and rate ≥80%, which improves mechanical properties. After heat treatment, the microstructure is mainly ferrite with a small amount of pearlite, has good strength and wear resistance.

1.Resistance to Internal Pressure: High working pressure with a burst pressure of three times the working pressure, providing excellent safety.
2.Resistance to External Pressure: Vigorous outer pressure resistance eliminates the necessity for special bedding or protective covering, thus leading to dependable and economical installation.
3.Inner Layer of Anti-Corrosion: Centrifugal cement mortar lining (ISO 4179) is a smooth, steady layered inner coating which protects the drinking water.
4.Protective Film: Zinc spraying (≥130 g/m², ISO 8179) with chlorinated resin paint cover further improves anti-rust property. Thicker zinc or zinc-aluminium coatings can be supplied as option according to customer's requirements.
Features
Ductile iron, a cast iron product, has the strength of steel, and the ductility and toughness of iron. For spheroidization, a treatment at stage 1–3 (rate ≥80%) is used to improve the mechanical properties. Annealed pipes consist of barely any pearlite in the ferrite matrix which makes them excellent in corrosion resistance, ductility, sealing performance and possible to install quickly.
Microstructure: Spheroidal graphite in ferrite-pearlite matrix. Amount of pearlite depends on pipe diameter : <≤20%< for small diameter pipes and ~25% for large diameter pipes. This exceptional combination of properties makes ductile iron pipe the preferred pipe for beverage water, steam and dry gas in commercial and industrial use.
Application
Ductile iron pipes in the size range 80 to 1600 mm diameter are available for drinking water (BS EN 545) and for non-pressure applications such as sewer (BS EN 598). They lend themselves to simple jointing, are laid in all weathers, often without special bedding, and afford a high factor of safety and sufficient flexibility to accommodate ground movements, qualities that have contributed to making them the choice material for a multitude of pipeline applications.
